Jack Conger, 17, won gold in the men's 100-meter backstroke at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific championship meet in Honolulu on Thursday night. His time of 54.07 seconds was a new meet record and 17-18 year-old national age group record.
The NAG record broken was previously held by five-time gold medalist and current world record holder Aaron Peirsol who was on deck as a mentor for team USA.
The meet is Conger's second international appearance representing the USA on the junior national team. Last year the rising Good Counsel senior and Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club star was a member of the team that traveled to Lima, Peru to compete at the 2011 FINA Junior World Championships where he placed fourth in the 100 backstroke.
